I don't think Ryan Lochte should be imprisoned. But I'm no fan of Lochte.
Well, that's not entirely true. I did root for Lochte, qua swimmer. I suppose, being honest here, I am a fan of Lochte, qua swimmer. Sigh. There, I came clean.
But I'm no fan of Lochte, qua human.
Wait... Unless, of course... I mean, sure, if you interpret "qua human" as an isolation of humanity in its purest form... Well, then, yes, who isn't a fan of humanity in and of itself? I'm a fan of any person qua humanity in its purest form in itself. I just don't like the jerk. Ah! That's it.
I'm no fan of Lochte, qua jerk.
Now that I've really put myself out on a limb, I can get to the point. Finally.
So, I don't like the part of Lochte that's the jerk part. The swimmer part and the purest form of humanity part, sure, I like those. But I'm totally against the jerk part.
But I don't think he should be in jail. Whether that's a controversial opinion, of course, will depend a great deal on what you think about crime and punishment. But, here's the thing that bothers me, judging entirely by a few Facebook posts, I get the impression that leftists tend to be big anti-crime, pro-punishment types when it comes to rich, white jerks. But I don't get that.
Usually, the argument -- insofar as there are arguments in Facebook memes -- is that there is some mostly or entirely innocent person of color who has been sentenced harshly over some B.S. charge, while someone like Lochte can escape punishment. Thus, the system (or systems in the case of international criminal masterminds that break bathroom doors all over the world) is inconsistent, and unfair.
So, look, dear Facebook meme, I totally agree with you. The criminal injustice system, as it were, is messed up. No way Lochte should be treated any better than whatever person of color is being treated in an overly aggressive manner by the system (unfortunately, you can choose whomever you want to insert here since there's always a lot of injustice in that direction). Totally agree. The system is racist, corrupt, and broken in a way that likely can't be fixed.
But, at the same time, if we are against the criminal injustice system and think there's way too much punishment, why does it seem that a lot of these alleged Facebook posts (I say "alleged" since I'm really not providing much evidence here that the posts exist; maybe you've seen such posts, and maybe you haven't; but, look, this is a blog post, and I'll just go with "alleged" to be safe) are on the side of punishing the white, rich jerk more heavily?
I don't like Ryan Lochte. I especially don't like him, qua jerk. Since that's trivial, I'm sure you agree. But, punishing him wouldn't help any person of color who is overly punished by a corrupt system. So, I'm forced to say it...
Free Ryan Lochte, qua person who isn't in jail, but if he were, it would still be too much criminal injustice.
